The Maui Nui Marine Resource Council (Council) was formed in 2007 to be an effective voice for better marine resource management in Maui County. Following the lead of our founding chairman and Native Hawaiian community leader, Edwin Lindsey, the Council utilizes the traditional Hawaiian principles below, in its meeting and endeavors:
Aloha - care for each other, the land, sea, our islands
Kokua - honesty, compassion
Malama- take care of things properly
Ho'omanawanui - be patient
Ike - recognize, acknowledge and respect each other

The Council works through its Clean Water Committee and Abundance of Fish Committee to help restore and maintain the marine resources we all depend upon.
Clean Water Committee
The Clean Water Committee (CWC) hopes to find solutions to water quality issues by understanding the types, amounts and the location of pollution sources to advise County, State and Federal agencies on better management practices and planning in the future. Members of the CWC helped create the Turbidity Task Force and a Water Quality Working Group (WQWG) for the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary's (NMS). The WQWG is developing a water quality component to be included in the NMS new management plan specific to Hawaii.
Abundance of Fish Committee
The marine life of Maui Nui faces additional threats from over-harvesting, stream diversion, lack of education on fishery management and rules, sea level rise and ocean warming. The Abundance of Fish Committee has helped establish a Community Managed Marine Area Network and a Maui Coral Reef Recovery Plan.
