The Council and community members participated in a training program with assistance from The Nature Conservancy to help willing communities establish Community Managed Marine Areas. The Council also invites guest speakers to monthly meetings in order to provide information on a broad range of marine related topics:
Pauline Fiene, Marine Biologist
"The Olowalu Legacy Reef"
Ekolu Lindsey from Maui Cultural Lands
"Hawaii Palau Exchange"
Darla White from DAR and Eyes on the Reef
"Reef Resilience"
Dr. Rob Toonen from The University of Hawaii
"Connectivity"
As a member of the Council, you will receive our quarterly e-newsletter, containing special opportunities to protect important coastal habitats.

Members of the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council are proud to introduce the Maui Coral Reef Recovery Plan - titled "Ola nā Papa i Mālama'ia: A Practical Plan for the Technical and Cultural Restoration of Maui's Coral Reefs."
In 2010, the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council established the Maui Coral Reef Recovery Team composed of community members, scientists and cultural representatives, to develop a results-driven plan for the recovery of Maui's coral reefs.
Based on documented decreases in both coral cover and reef fish populations, the Plan addresses the major causes (i.e., land-based sources of pollution, overfishing, deteriorating water quality, invasive algae, and climate change) of this decline, and increases the adaptability of Maui's reefs to changing climates.
The Plan proposes four goals to be achieved between 2015 and 2025:
1. Provide evidence of coral recovery at selected sites around Maui.
2. Advance knowledge, improve understanding of the state of Maui's coral reef ecosystems, and document coral recovery.
3. Strengthen public awareness regarding the status of threats to and trends facing Maui's coral reefs
4. Strengthen the capacity for effective coral reef management on Maui.

Robin Knox is the Owner and Principal Scientist of Water Quality Consulting Inc., an environmental services firm specializing in Clean Water regulation and policy, water quality management and aquatic ecosystem restoration.
Pauline Fiene as a scientist, avid SCUBA diver and owner of Mike Severns Diving Company. Her specialty is Opisthobranchs (a small group of shell-less mollusks). Through many years of diving and studying coral reefs Pauline has gained a deep understanding of coral reef ecology and discovered the spawning patterns of various Hawaiian corals. Pauline has presented data gathered by marine naturalist Cory Pittman, and believes Olowalu to be a unique and diverse habitat; she is concerned that development in the area will negatively impact the Olowalu coral reef ecosystem. During the GPAC review and the current EIS public comment period for the Olowalu development, Pauline submitted scientific based testimony.
